I've heard that gum disease can threaten my health. Can you explain?

When should my child first see the dentist?

Most children respond well to a dental visit around age three, though the ADA recommends children have a first visit at one year of age. Bring your child with you to your appointment so that he or she can become acclimated to our office. If you notice any development problems with your child's mouth or teeth, call our Detroit dental office to schedule a visit immediately. Otherwise, we'd like to begin teaching your children how to care for their teeth and gums when they reach three or four years of age. By age four or five, they can begin hygiene treatments and regular checkups. We'll do everything possible to make your child's visit a fun, positive experience.

How does an intraoral camera help with my dental care?

During your exam or checkup, we'll use a small, hand-held intraoral camera to take pictures inside your mouth. Your dentist will display these photos on a monitor to explain his findings and therapy suggestions. Intraoral photos provide a detailed view of areas that require intervention and are a valuable teaching tool to help patients make wise decisions and become true partners in treatment planning.

What precautions do you take to ensure patient safety?

We follow strict guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and OSHA. Our practices include sterilizing reusable instruments in an autoclave, then sealing them for the next use; disinfecting treatment rooms between patient visits; and using disposable products when possible. We always wear disposable gloves during exams and treatment, for your safety.

Does your office use lasers?

Yes. We use lasers for precise, comfortable dentistry. Our dentists employ a non-invasive DIAGNOdent laser instead of a dental hook to detect cavities. DIAGNOdent quickly and efficiently scans your teeth for decay and areas prone to decay. Early cavity detection means that we can preserve more of your natural tooth when restoring dental health.

Our soft-tissue laser allows us to treat severe cases of gum disease, prepare mouths for restorative therapies, perform biopsies, and more. You won't need stitches after laser surgery, and bleeding is minimal. Most patients recover more quickly after laser surgery than they do following traditional surgery.
